The Westchester County Health Department has announced the closure of Mohegan Lake beaches due to a Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) detected in the swimming areas. This decision affects all county-regulated beaches on Mohegan Lake and will remain in place until further notice.
Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler stated, “The decision to close these beaches is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and health of the public. Harmful Algae Blooms are more prevalent during hot days when water temperatures rise, leading to increased bacteriological growth rates.”
For the beaches to reopen, it is necessary for the algae to be fully cleared from the swimming areas. Afterward, water samples will be collected and sent for analysis.
The department advises residents and visitors to check the Westchester County website for updates regarding beach closures and reopening schedules. The county emphasizes its commitment to maintaining high standards of environmental health and safety at its recreational facilities.
