Westchester County Commissioner of the Department of Community Mental Health, Michael Orth, has been appointed to the Opioid Settlement Fund Advisory Board by State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. The board was created following settlements with opioid manufacturers that generated nearly $1 billion in funds. Its purpose is to ensure that these funds are allocated to programs aimed at combating overdose and addiction. The Office of Addiction Services and Supports oversees the board, which will provide recommendations on fund allocation.
Ken Jenkins, Westchester County Executive, expressed his pride in Orth’s appointment: “Westchester County is proud to share the talent of DCMH Commissioner Michael Orth with our colleagues in New York State.” Jenkins emphasized Orth’s experience and leadership within Westchester’s own Opioid Response committee, highlighting the importance of appropriate fund usage for treatment, prevention, recovery, and harm reduction.
The advisory board is tasked with making evidence-based recommendations that consider successful federal, state, or local initiatives in substance use disorder prevention and treatment. These recommendations are submitted annually by November 1st to various state officials including the Governor and legislative leaders.
Michael Orth expressed gratitude for his appointment: “I want to thank Senator Stewart-Cousins for her confidence in me to serve in this important role.”
