Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center has introduced its enhanced Education Garden, a space designed to serve as an interactive farming demonstration area. This garden, which includes an outdoor classroom, is expected to become a focal point for educational visits by school-age children.

The newly unveiled Education Garden complies with ADA standards, making it accessible to all visitors and allowing inclusive participation in farming activities. It features eight in-ground beds and two raised beds that are fully ADA-compliant for growing food. Additionally, the garden’s perimeter is planted with local ecotype native plants to highlight the relationship between food, environments, and human well-being.

To address environmental concerns, permeable paving has been incorporated into the garden design to absorb stormwater and reduce flooding risks. A rainwater capture system collects runoff from the roof of the outdoor classroom portico, providing a practical example of sustainable water management. The covered classroom offers year-round protection from weather conditions for ongoing learning activities, while a new tool shed ensures safe storage for tools used by students and volunteers.

County Executive Ken Jenkins commented: “Hilltop Hanover Farm’s Education Garden was designed to demonstrate what sustainable, inclusive and educational agriculture can look like. It’s a space that brings the community together while modeling environmental best practices. The Farm’s civic involvement and preservation of farmland strengthen food security, inspire environmental stewardship and empower the next generation of farmers.”

The farm is recognized for its efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture and equitable food systems. Notably, 25 percent of its annual harvest is donated through partnerships with local food access organizations. All produce from the Education Garden will be distributed via these partners.

Kathy O’Connor, Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation stated: “Educating the public on farming practices is one of Hilltop Hanover Farm’s top priorities, and the addition of its Education Garden will add a new layer of hands-on learning and inspiration for visitors of all ages.”

Funding for this project came from The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm, Con Edison, and an anonymous foundation.

Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center operates under the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights, NY.
