After a recent major winter storm, the Mayor of Hastings-on-Hudson addressed residents to acknowledge the community’s response and efforts during the event. The Department of Public Works (DPW), led by Superintendent Mike Gunther, worked from early Sunday through Monday morning to clear roads and continued their work into the following days. Residents are asked to keep following village instructions until an official all-clear is given.

The mayor also recognized the Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, noting that around thirty volunteers staffed local stations for over twelve hours during the storm. They responded to several calls, including three fire department responses, one emergency medical service call, and two carbon monoxide incidents—one due to snow-blocked boiler vents. The mayor reminded residents: “This serves as an important reminder to check those exterior vent pipes – especially with newer, high-efficiency boilers that require proper ventilation. Thankfully, working CO detectors alerted the homeowners and prevented a more serious outcome.”

Residents were commended for helping each other by moving vehicles promptly and clearing snow from fire hydrants—a task critical for firefighters’ quick response times in emergencies. The mayor emphasized: “While our fire apparatus carry shovels, clearing hydrants during an emergency can delay firefighters from quickly supplying water at a fire scene. Your efforts help keep everyone safer.” He also urged residents to keep sidewalks clear for students, commuters, and pedestrians.

In closing remarks, the mayor said: “Thank you all for your patience as we continue to dig out from this storm, and for looking out for one another. Please stay warm, and I wish you all the very best.”
