The Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle announced on Apr. 3 that Leslie Rodriguez has been named its 2026 Youth of the Year, recognizing her for leadership, service, academic achievement, dedication to a healthy lifestyle, and readiness for life and work.
This annual award highlights the importance of supporting young people in their personal growth and community involvement. The recognition aims to encourage youth development by celebrating those who have shown resilience and commitment despite challenges.
Rodriguez, a junior at New Rochelle High School, was selected from seven finalists due to her transformation into a compassionate leader who mentors younger members. She received a $1,000 scholarship from the club along with proclamations and citations from elected officials. During her acceptance remarks, Rodriguez said: “Thank you to everyone who supported me,” while acknowledging Boys & Girls Club staff members. She added that her parents “are my inspiration for everything I do. They helped me see that I am capable of everything.”
She also shared how she found “strength and comfort” at the club while a family member battled leukemia. “After a long time of not knowing how life would end up, I can see it clearly now,” she said, expressing her aspiration to become a teacher and mentor.
William Iannuzzi, Chief Program Officer at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle, said: “New Rochelle’s future lies within the unlimited potential of its youths… We couldn’t be more proud of Leslie; she inspires us every day.” He also recognized three Champions for Youth: Gustavo Barbosa (New Rochelle High School Social Studies and Business Department Chairman), Brian Bracey (City Public Works Director), and Rachel Estroff (Chief of Staff to State Sen. Shelley Mayer) for their support to local youth.
Rodriguez will compete next for New York State Youth of the Year—a title that includes additional scholarships—and could advance toward national recognition later this year.
