The Westchester County Health Department has announced the closure of several beaches in New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, and Rye due to recent rainfall. The department recorded 0.72 inches of rain over the past 24 hours, prompting a preemptive closure to address potential bacterial contamination from road runoff into drainage outfalls near these beaches.
The affected locations in New Rochelle include Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club, and Surf Club on the Sound. In Mamaroneck, Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club are closed. Rye’s Coveleigh Club is also affected.
“Beach patrons are advised to avoid the water at these beaches today due to bacterial contamination from road runoff into drainage outfalls near these beaches,” stated the health department. The closures are expected to be lifted by tomorrow.
